Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), Chennai

Rajiv Gandhi Salai, previously known as Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) or IT Corridor is a major road in suburban Chennai, India, beginning at the Madhya Kailash temple in Adyar and continuing south till Mahabalipuram, ultimately merging with the East Coast Road. This is popularly called as the 'IT Corridor' because this stretch has become home to many IT/ITES companies.
The corridor, an ambitious six-lane project with service lanes and landscaping, is still in the making. The first phase — 20.1 km from Madhya Kailash junction in Adyar to Siruseri — was to have been opened by 2005. Plagued by delays, primarily due to problems in land acquisition, the stretch became operational in 2008. Feasibility studies are being conducted for phase 2 between Siruseri and Mahabalipuram.

Lifestyle and Luxury: 
The most stylish and sought after address in Chennai is Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), starting from south Chennai's luxury Adyar and stretching southwards parallel to the Coromandel Coast and East Coast Road.


Phase I consistes of an eight lane road which commences in Madhya Kailash in Adyar and stretches 20kms towards SIPCOT IT Park, Siruseri. Phase II runs from SIPCOT, Siruseri to Mahabalipuram.

Good Connectivity. Greater Access: 
Old Mahabalipuram Road is well connected to large catchment areas of Velachery, Adyar, Perungudi and Thiruvanmiyur. It has five link roads to the already established luxury residential location of East Coast Road. The additional six link roads connect it to the commercial and industrial GST Road.

Shaping a Lifestyle and Entertainment Hub: 
A major road in suburban Chennai, Old Mahabalipuram Road is attracting the interest of the entire world. Popularly called the IT Corridor, the area is in the process of being dotted with world-class apartments, hotels, entertainment and leisure centers - some of which are mentioned below.

Residential Apartments: 
There are currently over 70,000 people working on Old Mahabalipuram Road, a number of which is projected to increase to over 200,000 by 2010. To cater to this rise, a number of residential projects are under construction and an additional 30,000 apartments will be added in the next two years.

Hotels:

Hospitals and other amenities: 
In addition, there are a large number of hospitals in the vicinity, such as Tamilnadu Hospital, Lifeline Hospital, Chettinad Hospital and Praveena Hospital.

Entertainment Facilities: 
A large number of leisure facilities lie within a few kilometers for the entire family including entertainment centers like Mayajaal and Prarthana Drive-in Theatre; amusement parks like VGP and MGM; tourist centers like Mutukkad Boating Center, Crocodile Bank and Dakshinachitra; and beach resorts like Ideal Beach Resort and GRT Temple Bay.

Toll Plazas on OMR: 
There are two toll plazas on OMR and three on the roads leading to OMR.
1.Enterance toll plaza at Seevaram(Perungudi).
2.Exit plaza at Egattur.
3.Satellite toll plaza on 200 feet Thoraipakkam-Pallavaram radial road.
4.Satellite toll plaza on Sholinganallur-Medavakkam link road.
5.Satellite toll plaza on Sholinganallut-ECR link road(Kalaignar Karunanidhi Salai)

IT corridor:
The prestigious TIDEL Park is home to a number of BPO and IT/ITES companies. Almost all major IT/ITES companies like Satyam Computer Services, HCL Technologies, Tata Consultancy Services, Accenture India, TECCI Park, Wipro Technologies, Cognizant Technology Solutions,Scope International, Photon Infotech, Polaris Software Lab, and Infosys are situated along the IT Corridor. Prominent Government Institutes and technical/ educational institutions are also situated along the Corridor. The corridor stretches from Tidel Park in Tharamani to SIPCOT IT Park in Siruseri. All IT bigwigs like Infosys, TCS, CTS have their own facilities in the It corridor.
Besides, Small Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu Ltd (SIPCOT) has developed a Cyber City, spread over 2000 acres (8 km²) in Siruseri, abutting the IT Corridor. A number of IT/ITES Companies are in the process of setting up their facilities in the Cyber City.

Colleges: 
Important colleges along OMR include National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), SSN College of Engineering, St. Joseph's College of Engineering, Sathyabhama Deemed University, Hindustan College of Engineering, Jeppiaar Engineering College, Jeppiaar SRR Engineering College, St. Marys School of Management Studies, MNM Jain College of Engineering, Anand Institute of Higher Technology (AIHT), Thangavelu Engineering College, TJ Institute of Technology, KCG College of Technology, Mohammed Sathak Arts and Science College. National maritime University, the first in India is currently being built in Shollinganallur, The university complex will also house an Aquarium,National Maritime Museum,Food Courts, Hotel and residential complex. The ministry of shipping is seeking public private partnership to build a five star hotel in the complex.

Bus Routes: 
Chennai's city bus service, the MTC operates buses along OMR. Most MTC buses terminate at or before Sholinganallur, which roughly defines the official city limits. The buses that go beyond Sholinganallur are headed for Kelambakkam. These include 19B (from Saidapet), M5 (from Adyar), and 21H (from Broadway which is near Chennai Central railway station).
State buses and buses going to Pondicherry currently operate via East Coast Road instead of OMR.
