History of Telugu people in chennai

Telugu, the language spoken in the state of Andhra Pradesh, is the third most spoken language across the country, after Hindi and Bengali. In Tamil Nadu it is the 2nd most spoken language, after Tamil. Over 15 to 20% of the population of Tamil Nadu consists of a combination of Telugu speaking people and people who are descendants of erstwhile Telugu speaking people. Most of the Telugu people who today reside in Tamil Nadu are descendants of administrators, religious scholars, artists and Hindu priests who migrated during the rule of the Vijayanagar Empire and later during the British Raj.

Chennai, erstwhile Madras, was an invisible mixture of Tamil and Telugu cultures back in 1953. The states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu were one for many years before their partition and hence there are almost as many Telugu people today as there are Tamilians in the city of Chennai. The partition was a result of an attempt to protect the interests of the Telugu speaking population in Madras. The protests finally led to the once large state of Madras being broken up into different regions (Andhra, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu) on linguistic basis.

As per statistics there are approximately over 110 million Telugu speaking people spread across the entire world today, out of which approximately 6 million are a part of Tamil Nadu. To be more specific, approximately less than 19% of the population of Chennai are Telugu speaking people, i.e., around 0.8 million Telugu speaking people in a city of a total of about 4.7 million people. From 12% of the population in 2006 to a little less that 19% today, the Telugu speaking population in Chennai has been gradually rising. This is majorly owing to the IT boom in Chennai, which has led to the migration of people, from those parts of Andhra that border the state of Tamil Nadu, into Chennai.
